Low-Carbon Pledge

We are happy to share that by the end of this week, all our key stakeholders will have been informed of our low-carbon pledge and our ambitious objective to become the leader in low-cost, low-carbon hotels throughout Europe and the UK, with the aim of having the lowest CO2 emissions per occupied bed in the industry. In Thursday’s town hall, we will run through an updated low-carbon presentation, and we will hold a Q&A to solidify everyone’s understanding of why, when, and how we will achieve our goal.

It is imperative for every easyHotel employee to get involved in this project if we are going to reach our target of reducing our CO2 emissions by 38% across 10 of our UK estate by the end of 2023. In addition, we have dedicated teams within the most CO2-heavy departments (operations & construction) working hard to identify where we can reduce our carbon footprint and what measures we should implement to emit less CO2. The communication team is working on internal support to help all our easyHotel team to understand this key pillar as well as clearly communicating our pledge, ongoing initiatives, and progress to our shareholders and customers.

This project was launched in 2022, and since the first Sustainability steer committee meeting in November, we are proud to share that we are already seeing results from our actions. On the operational side, we worked on one of our biggest costs centers - the energy consumption of our AC and heating systems. We implemented various changes to these systems (including setting a temperature range and programming an auto shut-off in each property) in December and we have already received promising results across our UK estate when comparing December 2022 to 2021 given that we had an increased level of occupancy while having lowered the overall units’ consumption. We will continue to monitor our energy consumption each month.

One of our other goals is to reduce our plastic consumption and we have already taken decisive action to achieve this :

  • Water fountains have now been installed in almost all properties

  • All properties have received our new branded bottles, to be used with the water fountains

  • We are currently removing all the plastic water bottles from our vending machines

  • All our current cleaning suppliers align with our low carbon pledge. For example, in the UK, Kanso exclusively use eco-labelled products and recycled plastic containers for the cleaning products

  • In February, we will replace the plastic key cards with wooden key cards
